Adults Must Work Harder — But the Brain Remains Adaptable

Children’s brains are primed for rapid growth. During early development, the brain produces up to twice as many synapses as an adult brain. This massive neural foundation allows children to absorb languages, motor skills, and habits effortlessly through everyday play and exploration. After adolescence, the brain undergoes synaptic pruning—eliminating unused pathways to specialize and strengthen the circuits you rely on most.

The Brain as the Ultimate Adaptable Device

As we go through life and discover the activities, skills, and topics we enjoy, our brains allocate more neural real estate to those specific pathways. This specialization makes us more efficient at what we practice regularly. However, because our neural networks become so tailored, maintaining ongoing cognitive stimulation and introducing novelty is essential to keeping the brain flexible, resilient, and ready to learn.​

​While adult neuroplasticity is very real and powerful, it operates differently:

​​​Driven by Intention & Salience ​​

Adults require deliberate focus and targeted practice to build new pathways. Crucially, salience—how meaningful, emotionally resonant, or important something is to you—directly signals to the brain that a circuit is worth reinforcing.​​​

Repetition & Novelty

While a child might establish a new connection in 10 to 20 playful attempts, an adult may need hundreds of focused repetitions to lock in lasting structural change. Continual exposure to novel challenges ensures those new circuits stay active and adaptable.

"Use It or Lose It"

This capacity to specialize is a double-edged sword. Neural circuits that are regularly engaged grow stronger, while unused pathways naturally wither away or get reassigned. Because of this, it is critical to address sensory loss—such as changes in hearing, vision, or touch—promptly. The brain can begin reallocating unused sensory neurons in as little as a week, making full recovery significantly harder even after corrective technology or therapy is introduced.

Specialized Capacity

Although skill-building, habit shifts, and recovery after injury naturally feel slower in adulthood, the adult brain retains a remarkable ability to adapt, rewire, and heal when provided the right conditions.

Neurogenesis: Growing New Neurons

in Children and Adults

In children:

 

Neurogenesis is widespread and robust during development, especially in the hippocampus (the memory center). High rates of new neuron growth support rapid learning, memory formation, and brain development.

In adults:

 

For decades the presence of neurogenesis in adults was debated, but recent research confirms that low-level hippocampal neurogenesis continues into old age. New neurons are born in the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus throughout adulthood, though at much lower rates than in children. These new neurons contribute to memory precision, learning, mood regulation, and cognitive flexibility. The process can decline with age, stress, or conditions like Alzheimer’s, but lifestyle factors (exercise, learning, enriched environments) can help support it.

The key difference:

 

Children get neurogenesis “for free” as part of normal development. Adults still benefit from it, but they must actively support the conditions that promote new neuron survival and integration.

Your Brain Never Loses the Ability to Change — It Just Needs the Right Conditions

By intentionally applying repetition, focus, salience, reflection, rest, and visualization, adults can harness neuroplasticity to learn new skills, recover function, reduce anxiety, improve memory, and create meaningful change at any age.
